When I usually describe members of the Sztorm Tattoo Gdańsk team, I start with a short introduction. However, when it comes to Emil Ćwik TattooArt & Craft, I prefer to get straight to the point. Emil is an artist driven by a passion for drawing and a deep respect for craftsmanship, and this passion therefore translates directly into the tattoos he creates.
Emil Ćwik entered the world of tattooing at a young age, already during high school. At that time, this unconventional and undiscovered form of expression fascinated him deeply. Nevertheless, he quickly realized that talent alone wasn’t enough. As a result, he decided to invest in practice, discipline, and continuous improvement. In addition, after finishing art high school, he continued his education in design at the Gdańsk Academy of Fine Arts, which further strengthened his artistic foundation.
Although Emil was already familiar with tattooing, he temporarily set it aside during his academic years. Instead, he focused on other creative pursuits. For example, he worked as a freelancer for agencies, designed graphics, and created illustrations. Consequently, he gained broad experience, which later enriched his tattoo practice. Eventually, he returned to tattooing with even greater confidence and skill.
What makes Emil Ćwik TattooArt & Craft unique is his approach to design. Each tattoo begins with a fully hand-drawn sketch. Moreover, his imagination, combined with years of learning and observation, guides him through the drawing process. When a client presents an idea, Emil’s mind plays a short film of everything he has seen and learned. Therefore, he is able to translate that vision onto paper. However, if the subject is new or unfamiliar, he always takes time to research and analyze before creating the final design.
At the core of his work lies what Emil has always loved most: drawing. Over the years, he has also become passionate about lettering and calligraphy. As a result, his portfolio now includes everything from small inserts to large compositions. Whether it is intricate lettering or calligraphy intertwined with snakes, his tattoos remain distinctive. Therefore, it is no surprise that countless “old souls” proudly wear his work.
Nevertheless, Emil’s creativity extends far beyond tattooing itself. He is deeply passionate about books – whether they are traditional paper editions, audiobooks, or comics. At the same time, he constantly seeks inspiration in art in its broadest sense. Furthermore, his interests also include design and even cryptocurrencies. Interestingly, he often compares design to tattooing, since both balance on the edge between pure art and precise craftsmanship.
Finally, there is one concept that perfectly sums up Emil’s path: the 10,000 hours rule. According to this theory, mastery comes only through practice and relentless dedication. Emil embodies this principle, as his work reflects years of consistent improvement. In fact, in March 2023 he appeared on the cover of Tattoofest Magazine, which confirmed his position among the most respected artists in the tattoo industry. — read the interview with him.
